(SNO) – Carnival in Saint Lucia – including a special mention of Dennery Segment – has been featured by international fashion and lifestyle magazine, Vogue, as one of “The Caribbean Carnivals You Don’t Want to Miss This Summer”.
Saint Lucia’s carnival is one of five highlighted in the article, which was published on the magazine’s website on Sunday, June 24, 201. The others are Bermuda’s Heroes Weekend carnival, Barbados’ Crop Over, Grenada’s Spicemas, and London’s annual Caribbean carnival in Notting Hill.
According to the Vogue article, written by Kristin Braswell, “One of the most interesting parts of St. Lucia’s growing Soleil carnival is its take on soca music. An increasingly popular (and addictive) sub-genre of the music, called Dennery Segment, is rooted in St. Lucian percussion and Kreyòl lyrics. Its sounds can be heard far beyond St. Lucia in every Caribbean carnival. On the island, Soleil is celebrated over 26 days in July and includes beach fetes, street parties, and Calypso concerts. A night at Sugar Beach, with the mighty Piton mountains nearby, is the best way to close out days of nonstop action.”

Vogue began as a weekly newspaper in 1982 before going monthly years later. It published its first international edition in 1916 and today has 23 international editions, with a total circulation of 1.2 million.
