(SNO) – Camille Henry Memorial School’s April Dagana, this year’s top performer in the Common Entrance examinations, was “sad” when her mother banned her from watching television for some time.
Though she admitted to HTS that she stayed up and watched television the night before her exam, April does not regret her mother’s decision.
She scored 95.33 percent to emerge the top student.
“I had to like stop watching TV for quite a while. That just made me sad,” she told reporters on Monday, July 2 after the results were announced. “But it actually paid off and I thank my mother for actually doing that.”
“I feel really excited, like I really didn’t even believe in myself. I didn’t think I could have done it, and when they called my name, I had to cry. It was amazing,” she said, commenting on her feelings.
April is heading to St. Joseph’s Convent, her first school of choice, and she admits that she is already “prepared”, thanks to her sister who she said “taught me well” and “how to behave there”.
Her father, Bourdillon Dagana, said Common Entrance is just the beginning. He said it is “business as usual” and their next focus is secondary school where he believes his daughter “will do better”. He said all she will need to do is apply herself.
“I am happy that she did very well. She has done us proud as well as done the school proud,” he said.
Principal of the Camille Henry Memorial School, Beverley Dieudonne, said topping the exams for the second straight year took a lot of preparation and hard work, “even more so the parents really put a lot with the teachers who put in a 120 percent”.
Dieudonne said the students heeded the advice of the teachers, and the students have worked very hard.
“They put in everything that they have got, and now they are reaping the rewards and we are just thankful,” she said.
The principal described April “a worker, committed, dedicated, puts her all, and determined”.
“I told her she could do it and she has done it and I am truly proud of April. I am truly proud of all her Grade Six teachers and I am truly proud of her parents for being supportive and working with April,” she said.
