(SNO) – After the first two days of competition at the Netball Americas Champion of Champions High School Tournament in Jamaica, Saint Lucia’s representative teams are still in search of their first win.

Soufrière Secondary and Micoud Secondary are taking part in the week-long under-19 schools tournament at the Leila Robinson Netball Court, against teams from around the Caribbean.

On Sunday, Micoud Secondary got their campaign underway with a close loss to Dominica State College, 29-27. DSC, meanwhile, were thrashed by Jamaica’s Holmwood Tech, 60-24.

On Monday, both Saint Lucian teams played simultaneously, and both were dealt 15-goal losses. Scarborough Secondary (Trinidad and Tobago) handed Micoud their second loss on Court 3, 35-20. Anglican High School (Grenada) thumped Soufrière 41-26.

Micoud coach Shem Maxwell has led Saint Lucia’s senior national team to the Commonwealth Games, and she says that despite the mounting losses, there is much to be learned.

“This tournament is quite important to me,” she says. “Because going back home with those girls it’s going to be experience and exposure for them. Some of them it’s their first time coming into this type of regional competition, and you could tell, like at our first game they were a bit nervous. But going back home, I think they will learn a lot from this, and whatever they learn, they will put it into practice when they get back.”

Soufrière will be aiming for a sixth consecutive local schools title when the domestic tournament gets underway in September / October.
