(SNO) – The IAAF Continental Cup will take place for the first time in the Czech Republic on 8-9 September 2018, and Saint Lucia will be represented on the Americas team by none other than Levern Spencer.

The best athletes of all continents will compete at the City Stadium in Ostrava-Vítkovice in front of 15,000 spectators.

The Americas, comprising the top athletes from North America, South America, and the Caribbean, will compete against Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific. The Americas won the inaugural Continental Cup in 2010, with Levern Spencer grabbing a bronze medal in Split, Croatia

In this third edition of the quadrennial event, Saint Lucia’s champion is one of just nine women from the English speaking Caribbean, out of a team totalling 34 in number. She is the only woman from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States on the team, along with two men, Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Isands and Anderson Peters of Grenada.

Spencer and McMaster were 2018 Commonwealth Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, and North and Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Championships gold medalists. Peters won his event at the NACAC meet, placed second at the CAC Games, and third at the Commonwealth Games.

Team Americas, jointly announced by NACAC and the Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo (CONSUDATLE) on Friday (24 Aug) includes world pole vault champion Sam Kendricks, Olympic champions Ryan Crouser (shot put), Christian Taylor and Caterine Ibarguen (triple jump), Jeff Henderson (long jump) and 100m hurdles world record holder Kendra Harrison.

Athletes will be aiming to collect team points, individual prize and a piece, quite literally, of the IAAF Continental Cup Ostrava 2018 Trophy. The two-day event will be the first senior global track and field competition held in the Czech Republic.
