A former Lambirds Academy student has given birth to a baby boy at a local hospital here, sources have confirmed.

The female student was among a group of about 12 students who were due to leave Saint Lucia on Monday.

Those plans were however quashed and the students were told that they will be repatriated at a later time.

Sources have said the government was allegedly attempting to send the pregnant student home, to avoid her having the baby on Saint Lucian soil, which will in fact complicate the matter, given that the student is a foreign national.

However, United Workers Party Senator Mary Isaac had told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that sending home the female student is risking human life and criticized the government  for including her in the batch which were expected to be repatriated first.

Questions are now being asked about whether the baby will be able to acquire Saint Lucian citizenship, given that he was born here.

Attorney-at-Law Mary Francis said based on local laws, one can become a citizen by birth. She said the parents’ country of birth have different laws, which may allow them to apply for citizenship for their child.

The child’s father is also one of the foreign students.
