(SNO) – Saint Lucia’s women were outstanding in the 2018 RTEK RAN Women’s Sevens tournament, hosted over the weekend (22-23 September) at the Barbados Polo Club in Saint James, Barbados, and organised under the auspices of Rugby Americas North. Team Saint Lucia made the semifinals and finished fourth out of 10 teams.
In preliminary Pool A, Saint Lucia thrashed Guyana 25-0, lost to Mexico 20−5, demolished host nation, Barbados, 29-5, and edged Dominican Republic 12-7. Their 3-1 record saw them finishing a close second to eventual champions Mexico in group play.
In the semifinals, Saint Lucia were beaten 22-5 by Trinidad and Tobago. In the third place matchup, the Lady Zandolis fell 5-0 to Jamaica’s Lady Crocs, veteran Lisa Frazer scoring the try for Jamaica. The Lady Crocs also finished 3rd in the 2017 edition of the tournament.
Saint Lucia’s fourth place finish is the best by any territory from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, and signals the improvement in the standard of rugby football in Saint Lucia in recent years.
Playing in Pool D, the Saint Lucia men did not fare nearly as well, however. they lost to Trinidad and Tobago 20−0, Cayman Islands 47−0, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 7−0.
In the “Trophy” competition, the men beat Turks and Caicos Islands 31−21, lost to British Virgin Islands 26−10, and then took revenge on Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 21−12. The men finished 11th overall, out of 14 teams.
For over a decade RAN has organized the sevens tournament to increase competition within the region and provide member unions a professional setting to showcase the sport’s rapid growth.
