(SNO) – Windward Caribbean Kulture, better known as WCK Band, has paid tribute to Nehemiah Darroux, one of its members who died in a gruesome motor vehicle accident near Roseau in Dominica on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018.
Darroux, 22, also known as “Nehee”, died after his scooter collided with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) just at or shortly after midday.
WCK confirmed the passing of Darroux, the band’s keyboardist, in a Facebook page post, about five hours after the tragic accident.
“It is with heartfelt shock and sadness that WCK acknowledges the tragic death of our brother and band member Nehemiah Darroux, today, Friday 5th October 2018. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and music colleagues.
“His last post stated: “I can’t change the direction of the wind but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination”… how profound and at this moment how touching. Never did we think this would be a destination so soon. So talented, so much promise, so gentle spirited… definitely gone too soon. Rest In Peace our brother… rest in Peace. #WCK–”
WCK Band was formed in 1988 by a group of young Dominican musicians in Dominica. In addition to world music, the band plays a blend of local genres such as bouyon for which they have been credited for creating, as well as zouk, and soca.
ACCIDENT
According to local media reports, Darroux’s scooter reportedly collided with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) under the Canefield cliff, severing one of his legs, from the knee area, in the process.
He landed on or in front another SUV, and appeared to have died on the spot.
Persons on social media have been expressing concerns that too many male motorcyclists have died on the roads in Dominica.
A similar accident claimed the life of Olian Tarel Baptiste, 20, of Guadeloupe on Sunday, September 30.
Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Inspector Simon Edwards said in a report that the incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. in Mitchum, Grand Bay.
He said Baptiste was riding motorcycle (registration number PU535) in a westerly direction when he lost control and plunged 30 feet into a ravine.
He was transported by Personnel of the Fire and Ambulance Service to the Grand Bay Health Centre and then transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).
“Sometime later on that same day he succumbed to his injuries and was officially pronounced dead by a medical Doctor,” Edwards stated.
