(SNO) – Essex County College women’s soccer captured the NJCAA Region XIX Division I soccer championship on Saturday afternoon at the Proving Grounds, defeating 2nd seeded Sussex County Community College, 1-0.
The Wolverines offense exploded for three goals in this affair, after being able to only muster one goal when these two teams met earlier this month. Sophomore Shanearay Wilkins started off the scoring with a first half goal. Fellow sophomore and First-Team All-Region XIX selection, Saint Lucia international forward Lyla Lionel added a breakaway goal, and freshman Daniella Findley put the icing on the cake with a long range missle of a shot from outside of the 18′, connecting with the back of the net.

Wilkins was named offensive player of the game and NJCAA Region XIX Player of the Year Shaunalee Govia was named the defensive player of the game. The Wolverines, now 10-1-1 overall, will advance to the NJCAA Division I Northeast District Tournament Semi-Final next weekend.
According to Lionel, one of four Saint Lucians at Essex: “The captain of my ship keeps showering me with blessings, His name is Jesus. Another goal, another region 19 Championship. This was a team effort, teamwork makes the dream work. More blessings and remain humble in life.”
