(SNO) — West Indies players Kimani Melius and Qiana Joseph have repeated as two of the top Saint Lucia cricketers of the year, as the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association (SLNCA) divulged its annual awards list.
According to a source within the SLNCA, the two teens have copped three of the organisation’s four individual awards for 2018.
Left-arm fast bowler Joseph has been named junior and senior female player of the year, on the strength of making the West Indies women’s team for the ICC Women’s World T20, which was held in the Caribbean. The 18-year-old was named in match-day squads for just two warm-up matches, and got to play in only one, but that is more than any other female cricketer has done for the year.
Meanwhile, Melius opened the season with two 50s for young West Indies in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. He was the top batsman in the local Sandals Under-19 tournament, then went on to dominate the West Indies under-19 series. He added to his curriculum vitae by earning consistent calls to the West Indies B team, where he had several encouraging starts.
Meanwhile, Larry Edwards has supplanted Johnson Charles as senior male cricketer of the year. The left-arm orthodox spinner broke onto the Windward Islands team for the regional four-day tournament, and although his returns have not been consistent, he did have career-best figures of 4/34 against Guyana, and followed that with 4/47 against West Indies B.
