(SNO) – The IAAF World U20 Championships, Tampere 2018 (July 10-15) get underway one week from today in the southern Finnish city of Tampere, set to become one of the largest editions in the history of these championships.
Saint Lucia will be represented by a sole athlete, Julien Alfred, making her debut on the world stage.
Julien, just turned 17, won Saint Lucia’s first ever Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist at the 2017 Games in The Bahamas.
She also won Saint Lucia’s first gold medal in a sprint event at a major championship by taking the girl’s 100m final in 11.56 seconds, just three hundredths of a second off her personal best and national junior record.
This season, Julien, who trains in Jamaica, ran a national junior record time of 23.74 in the 200m to get bronze in that event for her school – St Catherine’s High – at the ISSA Boys and Girls Champs.
Julien placed fifth in the under-20 girls 100m finals at this year’s CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas, ruinning 11.68 in the final.
A total of 1466 athletes (782 men and 684 women) will represent 160 federations and teams in Tampere.
Only the 2012 edition in Barcelona, with 1566 athletes, and the 2016 edition in Bydgoszcz, with 1545 athletes competing, have witnessed larger gatherings.
