(SNO) – One of Saint Lucia’s talented young footballers is making his way to Scranton, Pennsylvania to continue his scholastic and sporting journey. Anton “Pouch” Paul will be starting school at Lackawanna College next week, and will be playing men’s football as a member of the Falcons.
A defender or defensive midfielder, Paul has played in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup Qualifiers, has been a Digicel Kickstart Academy Winner, and was named Most Outstanding Senior Footballer and Senior Victor Ludorum at Castries Comprehensive Secondary School.
Formerly a fine sprinter as well, and a member of Morne Stars Athletics Club, Paul was several times a finalist at the 100m and 200m at national meets, and along with his dearest friend Bradley Cyril, was part of the excellent MSAC and CCSS 4×1 squads.
Paul, who turned 20 last January, is also a member of DCYO FC in his home community of New Field, Dennery. A fine business student at CCSS and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, he will study Business Administration at Lackawanna College.
In Scranton, he will compete alongside the Falcons in NJCAA Region XIX. He will also benefit from the tutelage of head coach Rudy Roediger, one of the most experienced coaches at that level, with over 16 years of experience as a coach, scout, and recruiter.
This latest move by Paul continues the trend by members of Saint Lucia’s recent youth teams to further themselves in the sport overseas. Several of the island’s Under-21 footballers are presently at university in the USA or Caribbean, or playing professionally.
