(SNO) – 22-year-old Delan Edwin the latest Saint Lucian athlete to take up studies overseas, as the 2018 Independence Games finalist in the 100m and 200m is now at Southwest Baptist University in Missouri, where he will be doing a degree in Accounting.
Edwin is an alumnus of the Ciceron Secondary School, though he never represented his alma mater in athletics. He would go on to join Blazers Track Club under the guidance of Gimry Lewis, and eventually represented Saint Lucia at Windward Islands School Games.
With the SBU Bearcats, Edwin will compete in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division II. He will be coached by Corey Mcelhaney.
The MIAA is used to seeing Saint Lucians, including Nessa Paul, Fabian Felix, Maxime Charlemagne, and most recently, Alva Henry, all of whom were Lincoln University Blue Tigers.
Edwin will hope to follow in the footsteps of another Blue Tiger, former Morne Stars and Castries Comprehensive sprinter Mandela Clifford, who ended his LU career with a 4x100m NCAA title, a Saint Lucia National Record for the 200m, and multiple All-American honours.
To do so, Edwin will have to take a substantial leap in performance. His personal best mark of 10.56 was set with a wind of 7.0 metres per second this year. Clifford’s mest of 10.21 was set with a 5.7 m/s wind back in 2012.
