(SNO) – A young Saint Lucian has been shining of late for his school in the United States. Former VSADC Youth Academy player Meshema Charles, who hails from Arundel Hill in Castries, plays as a forward for the Berkeley College (New York) men’s soccer team. In recent games, he has been nothing but red hot, with five goals in two games.
In the victory over the Warriors of Vaughn College, it was the Meshema Charles show, as he put forth a career day by scoring four first half goals. The standout notched a tally at 1:48, heading a ball into the net off a gorgeous cross pass from Josue Jimenez. He then found the back of the net at 23:14 (from Matthew Perreira), and later scored a pair of goals just 51 seconds apart (32:40, from Carlos Veliz, and 33:31, unassisted).
The Warriors would score at 37:43, getting an unassisted goal from Kevin Moreira to cut the Berkeley advantage to 4-1. That would the final goal scored in the contest’s first 45 minutes.
The Warriors sliced even further into the Knights’ advantage early in the second stanza, as Azzeddine Sekkat scored to make it 4-2 Berkeley. Amadou Sy would score at 85:02 to put the game away.
Berkeley then extended its unbeaten streak to nine contests, defeating the Steels of Culinary Institute of America by a score of 5-1 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
With the victory, the Knights improved to 9-4-1 overall, and also finished an unblemished 6-0 in regular season conference matches in the process.
Berkeley struck twice in the opening half, through Omario Rosen. Just 4:59 into the second session, Amadou Sy increased the Knights’ lead to 3-0. Gaetan Roody Derinea gave Berkeley a 4-0 lead. And Meshema Charles accounted for the Knights’ fifth goal, scoring on a rocket shot (from Tcharly Verna) at 83:05.
Charles who is originally from Marchand was the VSADC Youth Academy’s very first goalkeeper.
